Parade Contest Sign-Up

May is American Indian Heritage Month in Minnesota, kicking off with a parade on May 1st. Throughout the month, community members participate in various celebratory events, including open houses and pow wows. This year's Indian Month Kick-off theme is "Building a Strong and Healthy Community." This year's parade will be on Friday, May 1st.

Schedule:

  • 10 am, the community will gather at Cedar Field Park at Little Earth (2500 Cedar Ave., Minneapolis) for an opening prayer, greetings, drum, and speakers. 

  • 10:30 am The parade will step off and will end at Cedar Field Park

  • 12 pm, the parade will return to Cedar Field Park to announce the float contest winners and have lunch

  • 4 - 9 pm The Minneapolis American Indian Center (1530 E. Franklin Ave) will be hosting a Pow Wow and Open House

A traveling trophy will be awarded to the winner, and other prizes will be awarded. A few elders will be making a decision about the winners based on how well the float fits the theme and originality.

* Participants can hand out candy to spectators, but please don't throw candy to help keep our neighborhood clean. Please dedicate one staff member to clean up any remaining candy on the street after your float. Floats are limited to one vehicle and/ or one vehicle and one trailer per organization.
